Writing formal essays “on demand”--based on a prompt, under time pressure--is required by CBEST, CSET-Writing, WEST-B, Praxis I/PPST, and many other states’ teacher tests, not to mention the annual tests required by NCLB.

Note, however, that this kind of writing isn’t just a skill to test and to teach. It’s also a tool a smart teacher can use! Teachers write masses of prose on demand, what with the IEP explanations, the letters home to parents, the reports to the district office, the grant applications, and all the other documentation that education requires. None of these needs to be great literature, but they do need to be clear, organized, and to the point.

Get a grip on those “on-demand” writing skills now, and on-demand writing on the job will demand less of your time and sweat in the future.

NOTE: Candidates for most California credentials MUST pass CBEST or use passing scores from either EAP or both ELM and EPT. If those initials mean nothing to you, please just get CBEST over with.

Candidates for California multiple-subject (elementary) credentials, who must pass CSET-MS, MAY use CSET-Writing instead of CBEST. If your writing skills in English are weak, however, you might be better off taking CBEST instead of CSET-Writing.
